Artist Statement

My paintings express the beauty I experience in nature primarily through the freedom of exploration which is based on intuition, chance and experimentation. Intentionality is also tied in with chance as the staining process itself is setting up the control of what the process can result in.

Painting on a material while on the floor helps free me to move intuitively through the painting as each gesture influences the next allowing me to arrive at an experience that feels genuine and fresh without fear or doubt.

Evoking both organic and atmospheric characteristics, the staining process enables the color to become more saturated within the cloth.

Color serves as the primary subject, conveying the emotional essence of the painting,

At times the scale of my paintings are large which encourages an immersive experience in which a viewer might feel free to enter and wonder.

Having references to the natural world, the material quality of my paintings appears to be unprocessed and untouched.

The subtle and intrinsic quality of the creases, folds and weight suggest that the painting is governed by its material presence.

Occasionally, the convention of display is challenged in my work through the draping and puddling of the fabric which also heightens its physicality and tactile qualities.
